(Regular posting will resume here at Gothic Charm School in February. Things have been very chaotic and stressful lately, which has led to a lack of writing.)
The Lady of the Manners gets political: The world has become a much scarier place for a lot of us, and we need to pull together.
- Stand with those who are at risk. Support immigrants, people of color, the LGBTA community, women, people with disabilities (visible or not), anyone who is “other” and is going to be a target.
- USA: VOTE IN THE 2018 MIDTERMS. Take back Congress.
- Donate, if you can. Time, energy, and money. Some organizations you might want to consider donating to:
- Planned Parenthood
- The ACLU
- Black Lives Matter
- The Southern Poverty Law Center
- The Trevor Project
- Immigration Equality
- The Wildlife Society
- the American Library Association
- Americans United for Separation of Church and State
- The Center for Reproductive Rights
- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
- The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN)
- Local food banks
- Local shelters for at-risk people
- If you’re looking for actions to do, take a look at the Women’s March website: “EVERY 10 DAYS WE WILL TAKE ACTION ON AN ISSUE WE ALL CARE ABOUT, STARTING TODAY”.
Take care of yourselves, and take care of each other.
(Please do not publish my name.) I am 60 years old, freshly retired, and my husband and I are looking forward to being able to dressing as we wish on a full-time basis with no bosses or coworkers to please. Yes, we’ve got the grey streaks, the arthritis and the naturally pale skin from avoiding the sun all these years (I look years younger than my age). However, after decades of pretending we’re a perfectly normal family, I was wondering: just how do other elder goths decorate their homes? I’m not talking “teen bedroom” or “college dorm room”, I’m talking the family home. Obviously I wish I could afford a “painted lady” so I could paint it black, but, failing that, what is the decorating trend for elder goth living rooms (etc.) these days.
I’m concerned. Why are you choosing to talk about politics instead of the things that most people here come for (Goth advice)? We probably all agree that what you said in this post is important but I’m concerned as to if you will continue to talk about Gothic advice here on your site. I know that you must be busy and so are all of us Goths in our own way. It’s just that I’m concerned as to if you will post a single Goth article this year. Sorry if I come off as rude but I would like to read what brought me to this site in the first place. Sorry if I upset you.
P.S. Everyone matters and we are all worth a space on this planet. Let’s not pay any attention to those that are out to stop our happiness! 🙂
I agree that we can’t turn a blind eye to the new legislature because the new laws can and will affect all of us. I sign petitions, keep myself well-informed and volunteer or donate when I can.
In response to the first post by Name witheld by request, have you tried looking at the Gothic Martha Stewart website for ideas? It might be a useful place to start. You might also find some ideas on Etsy or Pinterest. I do agree though, it would be cool to see an article on this topic on here.
